Global Cyber Threat Trends: What Spain Should Know

Global Cyber Threat Trends:

What Spain should know

Cisco has released its annual Global Cyber Threat Trends Report, revealing the top attack vectors detected through billions of DNS requests analyzed by its Cisco Umbrella platform. This data provides a global snapshot of how threats are evolving and how they affect businesses, governments, and citizens.

Top 3 Global Threats

During the period analyzed, three dominant categories were identified:

  • Information Stealers (246 million crashes/month): Malware specialized in stealing credentials, bank details, cookies, and cryptocurrency wallets. RedLine and other information-stealing Trojans have gained traction, especially through campaigns targeting gamers and Web3 users.

  • Trojans (175 million locks/month): Programs like Qakbot continue to infiltrate enterprise networks posing as legitimate software, exploiting weak credentials and vulnerabilities.

  • Ransomware (154 million locks/month): Although temporarily disrupted, gangs like LockBit continue to operate quickly and efficiently, fueled by the Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) model.

Spain: In the Spotlight

Although the report does not break down country-specific data, Cisco Talos has documented multiple active campaigns in Europe with targets in Spain. Some key aspects:

  • Increase in phishing and malware campaigns targeting medium-sized companies and public administrations.

  • Growing use of spear-phishing techniques in Spanish, especially in sectors such as health, education and administration.

  • Ransomware attacks in Spain have increased by 36% in the last year, according to INCIBE sources and parallel security studies.

How to protect yourself? Key Cisco Recommendations

  1. DNS Security: Implement DNS filtering to block access to malicious domains before they reach users.

  2. Endpoint Protection: Secure devices with solutions that detect anomalous behavior using AI.

  3. Network segmentation and least privilege enforcement to limit the spread of malware.

  4. Continuous user education: The weakest link is still the human factor.

  5. Backups and incident response plans must be ready and tested.
